Investing with Solar PV

With returns of greater than 10%, increasing numbers of people are installing solar PV as an investment for the future. Find out how solar PV can be an investment for your future.

A typical solar PV system for your home can cost in the region of at least £9000. This cost includes the panels, inverter, mountings and other hardware as well as the planning and installation.

A system generally costs around £2,000 plus £4,000 for each kWp and larger investments usually work out more cost-effective.

Feed-In Tariffs

Energy companies are obliged to pay you for generating excess clean electricity. This is known as a feed-in tariff.

The feed-in tariff scheme is administered by the Department for Enery and Climate Change, and they have made the following guarantees about solar PV installations:

  • The rate your are paid by your energy company is guaranteed for 25 years.
  • Your investment should return at least 7-9% tax free.
  • The feed-in tariff is index linked, meaning your investment will not suffer in adverse economic conditions.

For more information about feed-in tariffs and how you can earn money from your solar PV system, please see our Solar PV Feed-in Tariffs page.

How long will my investment take to repay?

Usually, a solar PV will provide returns after 10 years. However, this can vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of system and the location of your home.
