Solar PV systems generate electricity for your home and can earn you money. Find out more about how Solar PV systems work.
How do I generate electricity with Solar PV?
Solar panels are fitted to the roof of your house. These convert sunlight into electricity by using photovoltaic cells. Each weatherproof panel contains many photovoltaic (PV) cells. Find out more about solar PV panels.
The electricity produced by the panel is converted from direct current (DC) into the alternating current (AC) we use in our homes by an inverter. The inverter matches the electricity produced by the panel to the electricity already coming into your house from the national grid. The inverter then connects into your existing fuse box.
Is my home suitable?
Solar panels can be fitted to houses with pitched and flat rooves in both rural and urban situations. They can be fitted to almost any house which has enough light exposure. Find out more about your home is suitable for solar PV.
Does it work when it's cloudy?
Yes. The amount generated will fluctuate with light levels but the panels will still generate electricity when it's cloudy.
How do I use the electricity?
The electricity generated is used automatically in the same way as National Grid electricity. Any excess electricity is sold back to your energy supplier.
Will I be paid for my electricity?
Your solar panel will save you money by reducing your electricity bill. In addition, for solar PV systems under 4kWp, you will earn at least 44 pence for every unit of electricity you generate.
All you need to do is inform your existing energy supplier that you are installing a solar PV system in your house. We will inform the National Grid for you.
For more information about getting paid for your solar PV electricity, read our Domestic Solar PV Feed-In Tariffs page.
How do I install the system?
We will take care of all planning and installation. For more information about this, take a look at our Solar PV Installations page.
